Album of the Week (April 7 - April 13): Teebs - 'E S T A R A'

Teebs first full length LP Ardour came out via Brainfeeder almost four years ago.  Between then and now Teebs has released Collections 01 (which could almost be considered an EP) and a collaborative album with Prefuse 73 under the moniker Sons of the Morning.  While those two records were outstanding in their own right, I couldn't help but wish for a new Teebs full-length LP.  My wish has finally come true, and the fact that it has been released at the end of the longest winter in my lifetime seems perfect.  Teebs has released his second proper album E S T A R A, and the album (in my opinion) does not disappoint.  The record still features the trademark beautiful, downtempo sound featured on Ardour, but seems a bit more focused.  It seems a lot of the warping effects used on Ardour have been toned down to create another sonic world, one which is close in relation to that record but one that is entirely its own.  The world E S T A R A creates is hypnotic, and has a certain warmth to it which makes the timing of the release perfect (listen to this thing while walking around on a sunny day, you won't regret it).  There are a few collaborations on the record as well, the first of which is the third track on the record, low-key pop gem "Holiday" which features Jonti.  Other collaborators such as Prefuse 73, Lars Horntveth, & Populous all add to this record as well. E S T A R A is a kaleidoscope of sound and color, a more stripped and focused effort than his previous releases, it is still an excellent release.

Unfortunately, the record is not available on Spotify and NPR has taken down their first listen link, so I am unable to link the record for you.  E S T A R A is available through iTunes, Amazon, Bleep, etc.  Check it out! (for your health)

Album of the Week (March 31 - April 6): De La Soul - 'Smell The Da.I.S.Y.

It's been a while since we fans received a proper release from De La Soul (2004's The Grind Date to be exact, there was a one off with Nike in their series of albums that ran roughly 45 minutes and were meant to accompany you on your daily jog, but I would not consider that a proper release), so the announcement of two mixtapes and a studio album in 2014 was pretty great news.  That news became even greater when it was announced that the first of the two mixtapes would feature De La rapping over strictly J Dilla (R.I.P.) beats.  De La had worked with Dilla in the past, Dilla produced the title track from the 1996 album Stakes Is High.  That album was the first De La album that did not feature production from Prince Paul, who had been the main producer on their first three records.  The results polarized fans, but Stakes Is High, while a bit less light-hearted than their first three releases, still sounds great today.  Production from J Dilla would be featured on the next three De La albums (most notably the criminally underrated The Grind Date).  Smell The Da.I.S.Y. (Da Inner Sound of Yancey) sort of acts as a remix album of sorts.  The majority of the lyrics on the mixtape are lyrics from the De La Soul catalog reworked to fit J Dilla's beats.  The re-imagining of the De La catalog works well in my opinion.  It may be a bit jarring to long time fans to hear some of these reworkings, but give it a chance and be on the look out for quite a bit more from De La Soul this year.  Unfortunately the album is unavailable on Spotify, so I cannot directly link it for you, but I did previously link a site where you could actually download the mixtape here.
